Know how best to mitigate the effects of flooding in Nigeria
Flood Solution
TYPES OF SOLUTIONS
STRUCTURAL SOLUTIONS
1. Improved Drainage and Channelization
Upgrading urban drainage systems to be wider and deeper, and ensuring they are clear of solid waste, is critical for cities like Lagos and Ibadan.
2. Construction of Dams and Reservoirs
Large-scale dams (like the existing Kainji and Jebba, or the proposed Mambilla Hydroelectric Project) act as massive buffers. They capture excess water during heavy rainfall and release it gradually to prevent downstream surges.
3. Construction of Levees & Embarkments
Raised barriers built along the banks of major rivers like the Niger and Benue prevent water from spilling into residential and agricultural areas.
4.Construction of Flood-Resilient Infrastructure
Constructing stilt houses in the Niger Delta or using permeable materials for roads and pavements allows water to soak into the ground rather than pooling on the surface.
NON-STRUCTURAL SOLUTIONS
1. Early Warning Systems (EWS)
We use Google Earth Engine for understanding past and present flooding, for future flood alert & prevention.
2. Floodplain Zoning and Land-Use Planning
Enforcing laws that strictly prohibit building homes on natural floodplains or “green zones.” This reduces the number of people living in high-risk paths.
3. Reforestation and Afforestation
Planting trees along riverbanks and hillsides. Roots stabilize the soil and leaves intercept rainfall, significantly reducing surface runoff into rivers.
4. Community Engagement and Education
Training local residents in “anticipatory action”—knowing how to evacuate and protect assets before the Flood arrives.
